In the spring of 2022, the Port of New Orleans received helpful public feedback through open houses and two formal public comment periods. Guided by the input, the Louisiana International Terminal project achieved several milestones over the last year. The Port of New Orleans updated the draft terminal layout, identified a preliminary set of environmental studies to conduct, and hired an outside consultant to complete them. More recently, the Port announced a public-private partnership with Ports America and Terminal Investment Limited (TIL) that will bring an $800 million private investment into the parish.

The upcoming open houses will provide information about these milestones in addition to the project’s economic impacts and benefits, workforce development and job readiness, the preservation and enhancement of community resources, the St. Bernard Transportation Corridor, and other key topics. There will be no formal presentations. Instead, subject matter experts will be available to answer questions, hear feedback, and facilitate discussion. All interested parties are welcome to attend.
The Port looks forward to reconnecting with the community, sharing recent updates, and showing how it will continue incorporating community input into the Louisiana International Terminal. Those unable to attend can view the open house materials online from March 7-31, 2023, at LouisianaInternationalTerminal.com.
About the Project
Louisiana’s economic stability depends on its ability to meet current and future shipping needs. The Louisiana International Terminal will act as our state’s gateway to modern global markets and strengthen local and state economies. Located in Violet, the terminal will serve vessels of all sizes by avoiding height limits set by Mississippi River bridges further up the river. The facility will dramatically increase Louisiana’s import and export capacities and stimulate the creation of more than 17,000 new jobs statewide by 2050, Port NOLA estimates based on an economic study conducted by Lewis Terrell and Associates.
The project is currently in the design and permitting phase of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ environmental review process, which is required to receive construction permits. The Port of New Orleans anticipates construction will begin in 2025, with the first berth opening in 2028.
