Gov. John Bel Edwards appointed Todd P. Murphy to the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) this month to succeed Commissioner Jack C. Jensen. Murphy was sworn in during today’s monthly Board meeting and will serve a five-year term.

The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) marked the replacement of the 100th truck through the Clean Truck Replacement Incentive Program (Clean TRIP) over the 4th of July weekend, and 101st last week.

Today the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) selected new officers with the election of Joseph F. Toomy to serve as Board Chairman, Walter J. Leger Jr. as Vice Chairman, and James J. Carter Jr. as Secretary-Treasurer for the nine-month term. With the alignment of the Port of New Orleans and the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad, Port Commissioners and officers also serve on the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad Commission.

St Bernard Transportation Corridor

Governor John Bel Edwards today praised the award of a contract to study the St. Bernard Transportation Corridor, among other roadway improvements, to support the Louisiana International Terminal, a $1.8 billion container terminal planned by the Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) in Violet, Louisiana. The new terminal will be able to serve vessels of all sizes, dramatically increasing Louisiana’s import and export capacity and stimulating the creation of more than 18,000 jobs statewide and more than $1 billion in local and state tax revenue.

Gov. John Bel Edwards appointed Jeanne E. Ferrer and Darryl D. Berger to the Board of Commissioners of the Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) this month to succeed outgoing commissioners Charles H. Ponstein and William H. Langenstein, III respectively.

Cruise

The Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) set a passenger record in March 2023 for oceangoing and river cruises, topping pre-pandemic levels with 155,225 passenger movements and 39 cruise vessel calls at the Port for the month.

In March 2023, the Port of New Orleans will host a series of open houses about the Louisiana International Terminal, a proposed container terminal project in Violet that will enhance Louisiana’s position as a global shipping destination and serve as an economic engine in Louisiana for generations. The open houses will take place from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at locations throughout St. Bernard Parish.

In an ongoing effort to engage local businesses in the New Orleans Gateway, the Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) and New Orleans Public Belt Railroad (NOPB) will host a Procurement Contractor’s Resource Event on Tuesday, Feb. 28 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Port of New Orleans Administration building, 1350 Port of New Orleans Place, New Orleans, LA 70130.

The Board of Directors for Kumho Tires Inc., a global manufacturer of 17-inch passenger and light truck tires, approved an agreement with Melis Group LLC to establish a 350,000 square foot warehouse and distribution center in St. Mary Parish. This agreement is a significant investment in St. Mary Parish’s local economy as well as enhancing Louisiana’s position in the rubber and tire market. Through a partnership with the Port of New Orleans, the nation’s top importer of natural rubber in the United States, the distribution and warehouse facility in Franklin will utilize the Port’s existing container services.

Gov. John Bel Edwards announced a historic public-private partnership between the state of Louisiana, the Port of New Orleans and two global maritime industry leaders to build a $1.8 billion state-of-the-art container facility on the Lower Mississippi River. The new Louisiana International Terminal (LIT) in St. Bernard Parish will be able to serve vessels of all sizes, dramatically increasing Louisiana’s import and export capacity and stimulating the creation of more than 17,000 new jobs statewide by 2050, Port NOLA estimates.
